Sincethen, Ottoman Sultans were both sultans and caliphs till their overthrow in 1922.Ottoman government lost   some of its political power in theeighteenth century after its  continuous losses to the European governments; and Ottoman religious power and situation  declined  in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Nationalists opposed the Ottoman government after the occupation of Ottoman at the end of world war I and during independence war. Inability of the government to stand against  the occupiers  alongside with the contribution of  the sultan ,who was considered as the Islamic caliph , to the allies had a grave  damage  on the political and religious status of the Sultan . Having used this opportunity  in 1922,Mustafa Kemal Ataturk overruled the monarchy by legislating a law and then he overruled the caliphate  after passing a law in the Turkish parliament, having the last caliph leave the country .In addition to political factors which brought about the decline of the Ottoman caliph there were other factors which were effective in Sultans  religious status decline. Ataturk established a laicsystem and this new system stood against the religious-based  Ottoman  government. Therefore ,collision of both systems brought about the dissolution of caliphate. خلافت اسلامی بعداز تصرف مصر به دست سلطان سلیم اول در قرن شانزدهم از مصر به عثمانی منتقل گردید. سلاطین عثمانی تا انقراض این دولت در سال  1922م. علاوه بر سلطنت مقام خلافت را نیز دارا بودند. از قرن هیجدهم در پی شکست های مکرر دولت عثمانی از دول اروپایی تا حدی از اقتدار سیاسی دولت عثمانی کاسته شدواز اواخر قرن نوزدهم و اوایل قرن بیستم اقتدار و جایگاه دینی ِ دولت عثمانی نیز متزلزل گردید. با اشغال عثمانی در پایان جنگ اول جهانی و در طی جنگ استقلال، ملی گرایان ترک در مقابل دولت عثمانی قرار گرفتند. ناتوانی دولت در مقابل اشغالگران و همکاری سلطان که خلیفه جهان اسلام نیز به شمار می رفت با متفقین ضربه شدیدی به موقعیت سیاسی و مذهبی سلطان وارد ساخت. مصطفی کمال آتاتورک با استفاده از همین فرصت ابتدا در سال 1922 طی قانونی سلطنت را ملغی اعلام نمود و سپس در سال 1924 بر اساس قانونی که از تصویب مجلس ترکیه گذشت نهاد خلاف را منحل کرد و آخرین خلیفه برکنار و کشور را ترک گفت. علاوه بر عوامل سیاسی  که جایگاه سلطان عثمانی را متزلزل ساخت عوامل دیگری نیز در تزلزل جایگاه مذهبی خلیفه موثر بود.آتاتورک نظامی لائیک را بنیان نهاد و این نظام در تقابل با نظام  مبتنی برمذهب دولت عثمانی قرار گرفت.بنابراین تصادم این دو منجر به انحلال خلافت گردید. https://jhr.usb.ac.ir/article_1597_d7994a95a117a4313e2b8654e5549772.pdf
