Abstract

Abstract

After coming to power, Shah Abbas I (1038-996 AH) paid special attention to consolidating power in the center. In line with this goal, the leaders of the unruly tribes, who often sought political independence and had a tendency to run away from the center, were weakened and suppressed, and they were replaced by aligned and loyal tribes in the political structure of different provinces of Iran. This goal was achieved in Kermanshah by weakening and suppressing the powerful and restless Kalhor clan and raising the loyal Zanganeh clan. Therefore, the main question of the current research is why the people of Kermanshah took a convergent and divergent approach towards Shah Abbas I? The purpose of this research, which was carried out with a descriptive-analytical method, is to analyze the factors that encouraged Shah Abbas to adopt different convergent and divergent approaches towards Zanganeh and Kalhor tribes in Kermanshah. The findings of the research indicate that the strategic location of the Kermanshahs in the neighborhood of the Ottoman lands and occasional rebellions of the Kalhers in the region prompted Shah Abbas I to kill the Zanganeh tribe, in addition to suppressing and weakening the tribe. Kalhor provided the ground for Zanganeh leaders to be at the head of power in Kermanshah province.
