Abstract

Publications in contemporary Iran served not only as news media but also as tools for public education. This research examines how history was taught and learned through magazines and newspapers from 1289 to 1320 AH, and the relationship between this representation and dominant ideologies. The central question is: What strategies and approaches were proposed in the press during this period for teaching history, and what conflicts or gaps existed between the official discourse of history teaching and critiques from writers and teachers? The hypothesis is that despite the press's adherence to nationalist and archaic government policies, it also provided a platform for educational critiques, suggesting teaching method reforms, and promoting historical thinking. The research method is qualitative, based on critical content analysis of educational articles and reports in late Qajar and Reza Shah period publications. Findings indicate that newspapers and magazines served to both reinforce power and official ideology, while also facilitating critical dialogue on the goals and methods of history education in Iranian schools.
